Short film research: Suburbia

Image
This short film features sound, set design, and editing that are all relevant to our film. The diegetic sound is the first thing that comes to mind. This is a technique employed in horror films to communicate the film's emotions. The sound in this film is employed to convey the anxiety and terror he is experiencing. A non-diegetic sound is also used to depict the film's surrounding feelings. To make the viewers uncomfortable, the film uses baby sounds from afar. Then there are gunshots and people fleeing to add to the film's unsettling atmosphere. The mise-en-scene in the film is inspired by the clothing. The man is dressed in typical street clothing, and the girl is dressed similarly. All of the characters wear the costumes that they are portraying, thus it is a true representation of their personalities. This is primarily utilized in horror to depict how characters in thrillers behave and respond to emotions in their everyday lives and attire. Continuous editing was empl

Short film research: A Love Story That Doesn't Feel Right | A Horror Proof of Concept Short Film

In this short film, the sounds, angles, movements and editing were all shown very well to help establish the genre. These conventions are used for the horror genre. In this horror film, a VoiceOver was played throughout the whole film. This created a tone of curiosity for the audience. The guy who is using a VoiceOver is the boyfriend of this girl they are filming. This whole film is showing a point of view shot of what he sees of her. She has turrets from the dialogue in the film it states. In the film, cutaway shots were happening showing this. It showed her constantly making the same head movements and hand movements over and over again. Then a scene was showed of her making movements with her face but in relapse. It made her face go 10x faster and made her look even scarier. Close up of her face after taking the pill showed the audience her in a stare. At the end of the short film a medium shot was filmed in a dark setting of the girl writing something. A zoom in showed the paper

This film starts of with a diegetic sound. This is of a little girl coughing and struggling to breath. A two-shot of the mother and daughter are showing her struggling to breath and the mom trying to help. Over the shoulder shot is then shown looking at the daughter while the mother is talking to her. She is nodding her head no since she can't speak back. Her mom is saying she will be back. The dialogue and non diegetic sound of the creepy music intrigued the audience and made the film more suspenseful. A tracking shot caught the women falling down the stairs and falling. A dark figure was shown in a costume to be the demon of the film. This caused a element of terror. Birds eye angle was shown when the demon was following the Mom to make her look vulnerable. The setting was very dark to make the film even more intense. Lights started to flash when the demons came out and this was showing zoom ins and outs. A close up of the demon was shown and then disappeared to make the audienc

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

Image
In order to research and prepare for making my short film, I compared a short called Le Jetee and an article that describes 12 Monkeys. Le Jetee is a short film and 12 Monkeys is a full length movie based off of the film. My original google search gave me a description of Le Jetee and I think I will like it a lot. Short Film: To be brutally honest, Le Jetee left a mediocre impression on me. I like the foreign feel of the film and the introduction felt like where I got the bulk of the information. It was hard to process everything after the introduction, to be honest. There was so little and so much going on at the same time if that makes sense. There were images throughout which were kind of confusing but it made a bit of sense after I looked up how old this film was. I really didn't get the plot other than the parts with like time travel and Paris. It may have been a dystopia but I couldn't really tell. This might help with my mystery genre with the style of Le Jetee. I want

research: how to make a short film

Image
In order to learn more about the short film creation process, I watched a YouTube video. The video outlines some of the basics.  The video was decently useful for some friendly reminders before I start making my film. He gave me some ideas to improve my storyboarding at the beginning and also how to come up with ideas. I decided to look at his past short films and they all look pretty good. I also was wondering though, how many people he expects to be working on these. With everything he is saying, it seems like this was meant for people with a budget. Because I basically have no budget, I was looking for tips on how to make a good movie without the cost. Also, the materials he shows are very high quality. I maybe wanted to know about lower quality sets as I cannot move a camera on a dolly etc. I like his points at being smart with your decisions, however. Such as that you should be careful with what actors you choose because of time frames and also their abilities. I don't know

The three genres we would like to research is the horror genre, thriller genre, and drama genre. We want to research these because I believe these genres will best fit our film. The main genre I would like do is the horror film. This is because its very popular. Many people enjoy watching horror films because its interesting and fun to watch. We also did this genre last year so we are familiar with it. Our film is supposed to be suspenseful and give the audience anxiety while watching it. Its supposed to shock them and create fear. In our pitch it talks about the how a person is getting followed. This should make the audience in fear and create tension. Another genre we would like to research is thriller. This is very similar to the horror genre. This genre are defined by moods they elicit. They give the audience heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety. It focuses mainly on generating suspense and that's what our film is about. Our film wou

These are the conventions for drama-          Camera Movements Panning: This is used to show the characters and their surroundings especially in rising action or the climax when tension is high especially in a drama.  Tracking: This is used to add suspense and a tension          Lighting Low-Key Lighting is used to build tension between characters which is a needed trade in dramas where there is usually a conflict between two or more characters.  Camera Angles High Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the lack of power in characters usually in a conflict.  Low Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the power a character or group of characters have in the situation.          Elements of Drama External Conflict with another character Internal Conflict that only the audience sees  Tension, Anxiety, and Suspense in many Scenes       Sounds Non-Diegetic: This is used to increase the effect of the action/dialogue of characters. Diegetic: Usually arguing with other characters which is a na

genre research blog 3- suspense

Image
In suspense the camera movements are very important. Tilt is a very important camera movement in suspense. It shows the emotions in the film, by creating a questioning emotion through the screen. This allows the audience to feel the suspense from the film and the characters. Another camera movement used in a suspense film is zooming in. This shows the emotions of a character, which can create suspense for the viewer. Lighting is also important in a suspense film. Low-key lighting creates a dark tone that may make the audience concerned of what may happen. Camera angles often used in suspense are over the shoulder and close up shots. The over the shoulder angle creates a tension in the film, it makes the audience aware of what is happening to both characters. This will increase the suspense of the film for the audience. Close up shows all of the emotions the characters are feeling which may make the audience more concerned for what may happen. The elements of suspense are, emotions, wor

My group and I contemplated the genre for our short film quite a bit. We wanted to make sure we picked the best fit genre for us. We were mostly were debating between the horror genre and the drama genre. Last year my group and I went with the horror genre so I originally wanted to use a different genre for out video this year. But we ended up coming up with a very intriguing plot for our video that happened to fall in the horror genre. The plots we had for the drama and thriller were also really close to becoming the ones we chose, but the horror one just beat them. We chose the horror genre since we believed it would make the most interesting and best short story. My group members and I all really enjoy movies and films that are within the horror genre so we think that'll help us make a short film that is enjoyable for people as-well. For now we left our pitch as being pretty broad. We decided this was the best idea for now so we can continue to come up with new ideas and versi

pitch blog

1st pitch- This is a drama film. This is a high school film and the main characters are the popular kids and the nerds. The setting took place at a camp during the summer. A guy named Ryan would always pick on the nerdy kids. But behind the scenes he got with one of them. Her name was Alley. He thought he could keep it a secret until one day he got a text from her saying she is pregnant. 2nd pitch- After a bad break up, a girl named Ella needs a place to live. She looked online and found house with three guys that were looking for one more roommate. She learns many unique  senes and gains support from her new roommates. Our pitch- This is a horror film. This film is about a couple of girls going out to eat down town and see a strange guy watching them. They brush it off like its nothing but then the next day he is seen again. As days go on more suspicious things keep happening. We chose this pitch because its an interesting topic and will keep the audience on there toes. Its intrigu

For this project it did not take me very long to make the decision of who I would like to work with. The groupmates I will be working with are Paige Miranda, Lucas Di Campli, and Daniel shabani chatuel. Last year I worked with Paige and Eva and few other people. Lucas was my friend but he had a different group last year. Paige, Lucas, Eva and I have all been good friends since freshman year. We all have good chemistry and I know we will work well together. Paige and I had a very smooth and easy time working together last year and we never ran into any problems. Last year I was very pleased with how well everything went and the grade we received from Cambridge. Even though we are all friends and know how to have a good time together, we also know when it is time to focus. We know the expectations for this year and are ready to work hard and efficiently together. Even though we can switch around our groups throughout the year I'm pretty certain that our group will stay the same. I

This year, I am studying media studies at A-level. I'm ecstatic to be back in this class, and I'm grateful for the opportunity. Despite the difficulties with Covid previous school year, I had a great time in this class. It was a trying period, but my crew and I persevered and completed our tasks. This course taught me a lot last year, and it was still pleasant and enjoyable. I'm excited to see what this year has in store for me. I'm confident that my knowledge of media studies will continue to increase and grow. Until I attended this class, I had little interest in the subject of media studies, which involves film, cameras, and other technologies. Media studies pushed me out of my comfort zone and enrolled me in a course I never expected to be a part of. Despite the fact that I do not believe I would pursue this in college or as a career, it has been a valuable learning experience. I am ecstatic and grateful to be a part of such a fantastic program. Throughout the schoo
